Jurupa Community Services District Recognized for Outstanding Innovation in Seniors Program

Jurupa Valley, CA (June 26, 2024) – Jurupa Community Services District (JCSD) has been recognized by the California Association of Parks & Recreation Districts (CARPD) for its groundbreaking approach to enhancing the lives of local seniors. The Seniors and Students Program of JCSD’s Parks and Recreation Department has earned the Award of Distinction in the category of Outstanding Innovation.

The award, which celebrates agencies that introduce novel strategies in recreation programs, park maintenance, or district operations, was formally presented at the recent CARPD Conference in Santa Rosa, California. This accolade underscores JCSD’s commitment to fostering community well-being through innovative initiatives.

“We are immensely proud of the Seniors Program,” says Board Vice President Betty Folsom. “This award reflects our dedication to creating meaningful experiences for our community members, regardless of age. JCSD remains committed to innovation, inclusivity, and enhancing the quality of life for all.”

The Students and Seniors program is a collaborative initiative between JCSD and Eleanor Roosevelt High School’s Associated Student Body, initially established to assist seniors with technology. After witnessing the positive social interactions, the program evolved into monthly themed parties, giving seniors opportunities to socialize while allowing students to volunteer, hone public speaking skills, and introduce them to potential career paths in parks and recreation.

Additional programs for Seniors include Tai Chi, which provides physical and mental wellness benefits to senior participants. JCSD also hosts local educational field trips that allow seniors to explore and learn more about their community and region.

To ensure that its programming is easily accessible to all, seniors can participate in activities at two key locations: Seniors at the Eastvale Community Center enjoy open gym time and play sports like ping pong and pickleball. The Desi House is an events center that was once home to Desi Arnaz and offers walkable grounds and a serene atmosphere. Seniors in Eastvale can engage in social programming throughout the week, surrounded by history and natural beauty.
