JURUPA VALLEY, CA (May 16, 2019) – The rookie team representing Eastvale STEM Academy at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the city of Eastvale will be competing in their first ever Solar Cup Competition. Led by their instructor Mrs. Doloumar Bergen, the team will participate in the three-day event to be held at Lake Skinner, in Temecula Valley.

Solar Cup is a seventh-month educational program, sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), in which high school students build and race solar-powered boats, learn about conservation of natural resources, electrical and mechanical engineering, and sharpen their problem-solving skills. The single-seat boats are 16-feet-long, and they are built from kits of marine-grade plywood provided by MWD. Each year, member agencies of MWD receive an allotment of teams to sponsor. As a member agency, Western Municipal Water District was permitted to sponsor four teams. Jurupa Community Services District is co-sponsoring the Eastvale team

In its 17th year, the competition will be held from May 17-19, 2019 and will feature teams from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties. About 800 students, from over 38 different high schools will participate in the competition this year. Teams will be required to complete two technical reports, qualify for sprint and endurance races, and provide a public service announcement. With one student as the skipper in the driver’s seat, boats will motor through their races aided only by solar power. Overall scores will be compiled from the races in addition to workshops and reports submitted throughout the year. Solar Cup inspires students to consider careers in water, resource management, engineering, and environmental sciences.
