JCSD Aquires  Street Lights in Jurupa Valley

JURUPA VALLEY, CA – On March 14, 2019, Jurupa Community Services District (JCSD) completed the purchase of approximately 2,000 street lights from Southern California Edison (SCE) within the City of Jurupa Valley. JCSD worked with Western Riverside Council of Governments and SCE to complete the purchase and ensure a smooth transition for Jurupa Valley residents.

Most of the acquired streetlights provide lighting with High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lights. Although that is the most common streetlight technology in Southern California, HPS streetlights are not the most efficient. The light distribution is limited and much of the generated light is either lost or not directed to the desired location in the roadway. In addition, HPS streetlights cast an orange light which makes identifying color very difficult. This can make it hard to identify cars and pedestrians.

To improve safety, increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs, JCSD will begin retrofitting the existing HPS street lights to Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. In addition to efficiency improvements and reduced costs, LED lights emit a more natural light that is similar to moonlight. Objects are easier to see and look closer to their normal colors. This allows for better visual perception and increases safety. LED lights need replacement less frequently, about once every 20 years. This is a significant savings in maintenance costs over HPS which need to be replaced every 3-5 years. LED installation will begin in summer 2019.
