CA water professionals appreciation week

Recognizing the Critical Role of California’s Water and Wastewater Professionals

Water is life and less than 1 percent of the world’s freshwater is readily accessible for human use. Preparing it for consumption and ensuring safe delivery to the community takes a lot of work. The water and wastewater industries work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure that the customers in their service areas have continuous access to these essential services.

Clean water and proper sanitation efforts have saved millions of lives since they were widely implemented in the 19th and 20th centuries. Deadly water-borne diseases, such as cholera and typhoid, have been dramatically reduced because of clean water. Since the mid-20th century, increasing environmental awareness and government funding for wastewater treatment also resulted in substantial advances in environmental protection related to reducing sewer overflows and regulating wastewater discharge.

The fourth annual California Water Professionals Appreciation Week (WPAW) is October 2nd through October 10th. In 2017, the California Legislature recognized this week to highlight the important role all water district employees play in delivering safe and reliable water to and from homes and businesses across the state. Due to this vital service, this week is a great opportunity to appreciate the essential workers in the water industry.

Thanks, water professionals!

It is also a great time to think about a career in water and wastewater services. About 60,000 people work in California’s water industry and roughly 6,000 new employees are needed each year due to turnover. Since water and wastewater treatment are essential services that are continuously needed, it is an unwavering and rewarding career choice.

The water industry offers a wide variety of career opportunities. From engineers and construction crews to lab technicians and meter readers – it takes a dynamic team to make these systems run.

Water agencies need people with specialties in:
