Trust the Tap

Post Date:06/13/2019 5:17 PM

Do you drink tap or bottled water? Or maybe you fill water bottles at a “corner water store.”  JCSD and all water providers in the United States are required to test and monitor tap water each and every day. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires that public tapwater providers conduct comprehensive water quality testing by certified laboratories, in addition to providing annual water quality reports to water customers. The water from your tap is safe to drink!

Tap water is much more regulated than bottled water and corner water stores. Bottled water is tested less frequently than water from your tap and is stored in plastic containers that can leach toxic chemicals. There is no required testing for plastic bottles leaching toxins into the water or testing for possible bacteria that might form in water bottles. Corner water stores are supposed to be monitored and regulated, but often inspections are not consistent, and the water quality can be unreliable.

Spending more on bottled water doesn’t guarantee better quality. One gallon of JCSD tap water costs less than 1 cent, whereas corner water stores sell water for 35 cents a gallon and an average gallon of bottled water ranges from $1.22 to $2.50. Don’t be fooled into paying more for water than you should. Tap water is a much better value. Invest in a reusable water bottle and fill up water at home from the tap, fridge or even use a home filter if you prefer the taste of filtered water. For information about JCSD’s water, visit our website at or call (951) 685-7434 ext. 104.

The Annual Water Quality Report will be available July 1st, 2019
